README.KNUTH
=======================================================================

These icons for TeX system files were designed by Don Knuth.

They are for the Sun OpenWindows application FileManager.
He and TUG are registering them with Sun.
He plans to write an article for TUGboat describing them.

To install:
* Copy ./*.icon to /your/favorite/icon/dir.
* Change `/usr/local/lib/icons/' in ./cetable to /your/favorite/icon/dir.
* Run `ce_db_build user -from_ascii cetable'.

Since I don't use OpenWindows or FileManager myself, I haven't done
anything with them beyond a casual glance. But if you have questions or
suggestions, feel free to ask.

If you convert the icons to something useful for some other window
system, let me know.

For the convenience of the users on the DOS platform, I've shortened the
filenames to eight letters dot three letters. The following list explains
how I've shortened the original filenames to the now used in this
distribution:

cetable                    cetable
cweb_change.icon           cweb-ch.ico
cweb_source.icon           cweb-s.ico
dvi.icon                   dvi.ico
gf.icon                    gf.ico
latex_source.icon          latex-s.ico
mf_source.icon             mf-s.ico
pk.icon                    pk.ico
small_mf.icon              sm-mf.ico
small_mf_mask.icon         sm-mf.ico
small_tex.icon             sm-tex.ico
small_tex_mask.icon        sm-tex-m.ico
tex_source.icon            tex-s.ico
tfm.icon                   tfm.ico
tfm_mask.icon              tfm-m.ico
vf.icon                    vf.ico

Note:
The contents of cetable file has not been touched, it has to be changed
if you want to use with shortened filenames.
